auto-html
A small repository with test HTML pages that I opened to try out automatic deployment through a webhook.
auto-html is a small repository where I tried publishing the HTML files in a Git repository to a server automatically through a webhook. It holds a description file and a few sample HTML pages I prepared to test the publishing process.
Purpose
Instead of copying every change on a static site to the server by hand, I wanted a change pushed to the repository to go live on the server by itself. I created auto-html to try that flow end to end. The repository is a trial and an example, not a product.
How it works
A webhook is an automatic HTTP request that one system sends to another when an event happens. In this setup, when a new change is pushed to the repository, the Git hosting service sends a webhook request to the server, and after receiving it the server publishes the current files. One of the pages in the repository shows this with a note saying the files came from a GitHub webhook.
The server-side script that receives the webhook is not part of this repository; the repository only contains the content that gets published.
Key features
- The repository has a test page that combines different HTML elements, such as title, description and social media tags, an image, video, audio, links and buttons.
- A second sample page includes a small script that shows the current time, to make it easy to see that the published version is up to date.
- Because the content is plain HTML, no build step is needed.
Technical stack
The repository consists only of HTML files. Publishing is triggered on the server side by the webhook request coming from the repository.
Use cases
- A starting point for trying automatic publishing of a static site from a repository.
- A small example for anyone who wants to see the simplest form of continuous deployment.
Status
I created the repository in 2023 and last updated it in 2025. It remains a trial project.
